The bees are home

I moved my bees home today. It all went smoothly and they appear to be settling in. As you can see in the photo there is just the 2 boxes, which is where everything has been happening up to now, I will put another box on top this week which is where all of the honey will be (hopefully). Underneath the new box I will put a layer of mesh called a queen excluder. Only the smaller worker bees can get through this and the queen will be unable to lay any eggs amongst the honey as she is too big to get through the mesh.

That is one beautiful beehive. We will have to exchange honey this year. Gino has renonovated an old hand extractor so we are doing it the old fashioned way this year.
